LEARNING TO KNIT A HEEL
DIFFERENT OPTIONS OF KNITTING THE HEEL.

As you know, there are several ways to knit heels when knitting socks.

Consider three of them, this is a straight, stepped heel and a boomerang heel.

GENERAL RULES OF KNITTING

STRAIGHT HEEL

Cast on stitches and distribute them evenly on 4 double needles. The end thread marks the transition of the circular rows, which is always located in the middle of the back of the sock - between the 4th and 1st knitting needles.

Heel wall: set aside the loops of the 2nd and 3rd knitting needles. Transfer the loops of the 1st and 4th knitting needles to one knitting needle and knit as many rows as indicated in the instructions with the front stitch.

1) Heel cup:

Divide the heel wall loops into 3 parts.
On the middle third, knit with the front surface or with a pattern with the loops removed. At the same time, gradually include external loops in the work as follows: in the front rows, knit the last loop together with the next loop of the outer left third together with a broach (remove 1 loop as a face, knit the next loop with the front one and stretch it through the removed loop), turn the work and shoot 1st loop as purl.

2) In the purl rows, knit the last loop with the next loop of the outer right third together with the purl, turn the work and remove the 1st loop as a facial one.

3) Holes appear to the right and left of the middle lash, the beginning and end of the row are clearly visible. Knit the heel cup in this way until all the outer loops have been used.

4) Wedge instep:
Knit in circular rows on 4 needles. loops of the cup of the heel are equally dialed on the 1st and 4th knitting needles. On the 1st needle, cast on the left side edge of the heel wall from each 2nd row, 1 loop. Re-include the delayed loops of the 2nd and 3rd knitting needles. On the 4th needle, cast on the right side edge of the heel wall from each 2nd row, 1 loop.

5) In each 2nd circular row, knit on the 1st knitting needle the third from the end and the penultimate loops together with the front one, on the 4th knitting needle, knit the 2nd and 3rd loops together with a broach. Repeat these decreases until the 1st and 4th needles again have the original number of loops that were on the needles before the heel was made. Knit the foot according to the appropriate instructions.

6) Tape toe:
On the 1st and 3rd knitting needles, knit the third from the end and the penultimate loop together with the front one, on the 2nd and 4th knitting needles, knit the 2nd and 3rd loops together with a broach. Perform these decreases in every 2nd circular row until the number of loops is halved. Then decrease the loops in each circular row. The last 8 - 12 loops are tightly pulled off with a double thread. Fasten the threads.

STEPED HEEL

1) Transfer the loops of the 1st and 4th knitting needles to one knitting needle and knit the heel in straight and reverse rows with the front stitch or pattern with the loops removed. Loops of the 2nd and 3rd knitting needles to postpone.

2) At the same time, 2 loops on both sides of the heel knit in garter stitch, this makes it easier to count the rows and creates a more textured shape. Link the number of rows indicated in the table for the first step.

3) At the end of the next front row, set aside the number of loops indicated in the table. Return work. At the end of the next purl row, set aside the same number of loops. On the remaining loops, knit the second step (the number of rows is indicated in the table) with the front surface or a pattern with the loops removed, while again knitting 2 loops on both sides with a garter stitch.

4) In the next front row, remove 1 loop as a front one, at the end of this row, along the left edge of the 2nd step, knit loops from the edge ones (see the table for the number of loops), while the last loop knitted from the edge and the first delayed loop of the 1st step knit together with a broach. Turn knitting. In the purl row, slip the 1st loop as a purl and purl the loops.

After that, along the right edge of the 2nd step, knit the same number of loops from the edge ones, while knitting the last loop knitted from the edge and the 1st delayed loop of the 1st step together with the purl. Return work. Knit in this way in stockinette stitch or pattern with stitches removed until all the reserved stitches of the 1st step have been used. Then knit the loops of the first half of the heel.

5) Distribute the loops on the 4th stocking knitting needles. Knit the loops of the 2nd half of the heel with the 1st knitting needle, knit the loops along the left edge of the 1st step from the edge loops (see the set of loops for the foot instep wedge in the table). Re-include the delayed loops of the 2nd and 3rd knitting needles. With the 4th knitting needle along the right edge of the 1st step from the hem, knit the same number of loops as along the left edge and knit the loops of the first half of the heel.

6) Knit a wedge of lifting the foot in circular rows, while in each 2nd row, knit the third from the end and the penultimate loop on the 1st needle together with the front one, on the 4th needle, remove the 2nd loop as a front one, knit the 3rd loop front and stretch it through the removed loop. Repeat these decreases until the same number of stitches remain on the 1st and 4th needles as on the 2nd and 3rd needles. Then tie the foot according to the instructions (see the table for the length of the foot).

HEEL BOOMERANG

1) The boomerang heel is knitted on the loops of the 1st and 4th knitting needles, which must be divided into 3 parts. Loops of the 2nd and 3rd knitting needles to postpone.

2) The first part of the heel:
1st row (front row) knit and turn the work. Start the 2nd row (wrong side) by making a double loop: place the thread before work, insert the needle into the 1st loop on the right, remove the loop and pull the thread back tightly (so that holes do not form later). The loop scrolls on the knitting needle and becomes double. Place the thread again before work, purl the remaining loops and turn the work.

3) Next, knit in short rows. In the 3rd row at the beginning of the row, perform a double loop, then tie the faces. n. to the double loop at the end of the row and turn the work. Do not knit a double loop! In the 4th row at the beginning of the row, perform a double loop, then tie out. n. to the double loop at the end of the row and turn the work.

4) Repeat 3rd and 4th rows until only middle third sts remain between double sts. Then, on all the loops of the sock, knit 2 circular rows with front loops, knitting each double loop in the 1st row as one loop. If the upper part of the foot is knitted with a decorative pattern, then continue it according to the pattern. After that, the loops of the upper part of the foot are again put aside.

5) The second part of the heel:
1st (front row): knit right and middle loops and turn the work.
2nd row (purl row): work a double loop, purl the remaining loops of the middle third and turn the work.
3rd row: work a double loop, knit the front loops to the double loop, knit it as one front loop. Knit the 1st loop of the left third and turn the work.
4th row: work a double loop, purl up to a double loop, knit it as one purl loop, purl the 1st loop of the right third and turn the work.

6) Repeat the 3rd and 4th rows until all heel loops are included in the work again. Then knit in circular rows on all the loops of the sock.

How pleasant it is to wear a thing made by one's own hands, but it is doubly pleasant to create for others. I love knitting very much. When I have a free minute, I pick up knitting needles. I learned to knit from childhood. Socks are the first product that I knitted. I will share my knowledge with you.

We knit socks on 5 knitting needles, a master class for beginners

The sock consists of five parts:

  1. cuff,
  2. top part,
  3. heel,
  4. main part,
  5. toe.

For knitting socks, we need knitting needles in the amount of 5 pieces with a diameter of 2 - 2.5 mm. We take soft threads. We will need about two balls of 100 g each. If desired, you can add a thread of a different color.

Having mastered the technique of knitting socks on 5 knitting needles, you can try to knit them with 2 knitting needles, see the master class.

We cast on the knitting needles the number of loops in multiples of four, I cast on 64 loops (a multiple of four), first measured the circumference of the foot with a centimeter.

We divide the dialed loops into four knitting needles.

We connect the last loop of the fourth knitting needle and the first loop of the first knitting needle (using a hook or knitting needle), skipping the remaining thread on the knitting needle.

We tie a knot.

Now we take the fifth knitting needle in our hands and knit the cuff of the sock in a circle.

I knitted an elastic band: two facial, two purl loops.

I like high elastic bands in socks, so my cuff height is 9 cm or 30 rows. For beauty, I knitted pink stripes four rows wide.

After the cuff, we knit the upper part of the sock with the front loops, grabbing the upper loop with a knitting needle.

Having knitted 4 cm or 15 rows, we proceed to knitting the heel. Here you can add to the main thread - a simple thread of the same color. This is done so that the heel does not rub quickly and is stronger.

We proceed directly to knitting the heel. The width of the heel is equal to the number of loops on two knitting needles. In my case, 32 loops. We connect the first and fourth knitting needles. We knit facial and purl loops for 16 rows. This is the heel height.

We remove the first loop at the beginning of the row, and we knit the last one - with a purl loop. This is necessary to form a beautiful edge.

Now we will knit the lower part of the heel. We divide the number of loops by three. Moreover, on the sides of the loops should be the same, and in the middle - as much as you like. We distribute the loops on three knitting needles. On the side needles I have 11 loops, and in the middle - 10 pieces. We knit with facial loops: the first 11 and the middle 9 loops. We knit the tenth with the front loop, and then the first loop of the third knitting needle. Now we lower the tenth loop (i.e. remove the loop from the knitting needle). We'll have a chain.

The heel will be rounded. On the side knitting needles, the loops will decrease, because. we knit only the middle ones - ten loops. We unfold the needles. We remove the first loop. We knit a row with purl loops. We knit the last loop of the second knitting needle and the first loop of the first knitting needle together with the wrong loop. Turn the needles over and knit the front row. We remove the first loop. At the end we lower the loop, as we already did.

So we knit until the loops on the side knitting needles end.

We turn the sock, with an elastic band towards us and we knit a row with facial loops. Now we unfold the other side and collect loops from the formed sides of the toe. I had 11 loops on the side knitting needles, which means the same number of loops, I should dial now. We knit the typed loops not just with facial loops. We knit them with crossed loops (we take the loop not by the lower part, but by the upper one) so that holes do not form.

Now we knit the main part of the sock, periodically reducing the loops, if necessary. This can be found by measuring the sock. We make decreases in a row, one loop, alternately on each knitting needle.

We knit the main part of the sock to the middle of the thumb.

Let's move on to knitting the toe. I have 44 loops left. We will do the decrease of loops, starting from the second knitting needle. We knit the first eleven loops on the first knitting needle without changes. On the second needle, having knitted eight loops, the next two loops are knitted together for the back walls. The last loop of the knitting needle - we knit with the front loop and the first of the third knitting needle too. We knit the next two loops of the third knitting needle with the front loop behind the front walls. We knit facial loops to the end of the knitting needle. We knit the fourth knitting needle in the same way, we knit the ninth and tenth loops together with the front for the back walls and one front loop. In the future, the loops will decrease and you can knit the toe on only two knitting needles. Thus, the chain is formed on the sides of the sock. If we fold the sock in half, then this is clearly visible.

We continue to knit in this pattern until only eight loops remain on two knitting needles.

With the help of a hook, we thread the thread through the remaining loops.

Tie a knot and hide it inside the sock.

Our sock is ready. It remains to tie the same on the second leg.

Finished products can be slightly steamed with an iron, the threads and seams will straighten out, and the thing will look prettier.

A reinforced heel was also knitted several decades ago. In recent years, needlewomen have returned to it again. Simple knitting pattern + more resistant to wear. Suitable for wearing under shoes.

Socks are usually knitted on five needles. Knitting is located on 4x, the fifth - we knit.

The heel is knitted on two needles. The tip of the set of loops should look inside the leg. If you fold the knitting so that two knitting needles are on top, two are on the bottom, then for the left leg the tip should be on the right. For the right leg - on the left.

We start the reinforced heel by transferring knitting to one knitting needle. We knit not in a circle, but the front and back row. Knitting on one knitting needle, we knit with the second knitting needle.

Knitting on the upper knitting needles is not touched yet.

You can first knit one front row, one wrong side.

Reinforced heel. Knitting pattern

Next, we knit according to the scheme: one front loop, one removed untied, one front, one untied; knit to the end of the row. Knitting on two knitting needles, so we remove the first loop untied - this is the first edge. We knit the last loop from the wrong side. This rule applies to both the front side and the wrong side. With these edging“pigtails” are formed, from which we will later raise loops.

From the wrong side we knit all loops purl. Unknitted loops of the front side we also knit

The loops that we remove untied will form a convex pigtail along the pattern.

The length of the heel lift (number of rows) depends on the volume of the leg. On an average fullness leg of 37-39 sizes, 12-15 rows are enough.

Video instruction

The heel in the sock is the most “erasable” part. No wonder our grandmothers and great-grandmothers darned socks in these places. Such a scheme will make this part vulnerable to holes stronger.

If you like to knit socks with a simple pattern, for example, a reinforced heel will look great!

After knitting the reinforced heel, the heel itself is knitted. One of the ways is a horseshoe heel. You can see a step-by-step description of knitting.

"DUTCH" HEEL.

(Example - 72 loops in the first row).

Divide the number of stitches in the row by four. After that, we knit the first quarter (full number of loops) on one knitting needle, skip the last quarter of the row to the other end of the same knitting needle, these loops are for the heel; we divide the other two quarters on two knitting needles and leave them - they are for lifting the foot. For the heel, we always do not knit the first loop, we knit rows with purl and front loops alternately, the number of rows equal to the number of loops on the knitting needle (i.e. 36 rows), the last row is purl. After that, turn the heel, 22 knit, 1 broach, turn, * 9 out, 2 out of inm, turn, 9 persons, 1 broach, turn, repeat from * until all the loops are connected. The last row is purl. We knit half of the loops back, thus completing the heel. We move all the lifting loops to one knitting needle. Taking another knitting needle, we knit the remaining loops of the heel and we knit 18 loops along the side of the heel; from the second knitting needle we knit lifting loops; from the third needle we knit 18 loops on the side of the heel and the first half of the heel loops. We continue to knit already round to the end of the foot.

"FRENCH" HEEL.

(Example 68 loops in the first row).

We separate the loops in the same way as for the Dutch heel. For the heel, we always do not knit the first loop, we knit rows with purl and facial alternately, the number of rows is equal to the number of loops on the knitting needle (i.e., 34 rows), the last row is purl. After that, we turn the heel, 20 persons, 2 persons vm, turn, 7 out, 2 out vm, turn, 8 persons, 2 persons vm, turn, 9 out, 2 out vm, turn, 10 persons, 2 persons vm, turn ; Continue in this manner until all heel sts are on the same needle again. We knit another half of the loops, thus completing the heel. We shift all the lifting loops into one row again. Taking an additional knitting needle, knit the remaining loops of the heel and knit up 17 loops along the side of the heel; from the second knitting needle we knit lifting loops; from the third needle we knit 17 loops on the other side of the heel and the first half of the heel loops. We continue to knit already round to the end of the foot.

Knit heel wedge instep

The two main types of such a heel are the usual square heel (aka Danish) and the round one (more common in Western descriptions). The principle of their knitting is not tied to the plates and therefore they can be knitted on any number of loops Smile

Square heel

English dutch heel

The name, as you can see, comes from the rectangle/square that forms the turn of the heel. English name - dutch heel

Description of knitting according to the book of Margarita Maximova. In the example of a sock for 40 loops

Heel shaping.

heel wall

Divide the knitting into 2 equal parts and then knit only the loops of two knitting needles: the 3rd and 4th. The loops of the 1st and 2nd knitting needles do not participate in the formation of the heel. To make it more convenient to work, first knit the loops from two knitting needles to one (from the 3rd and 4th) and then knit a straight fabric with stocking stitch - heel height (Fig. 339). The height of the fabric is determined as follows: the number of edge loops of the fabric should be equal to the number of loops on one knitting needle. In this example, there should be 10 edging (20 rows). After that, knitting is suspended, finishing it with the front row.

Heel turn

Now the canvas needs to be shaped like a heel. This is achieved by decreasing the loops inside the canvas. Mentally divide the loops, including the edge ones, into 3 equal parts. If the number is not divisible by 3, then add the remainder to the middle part. In this case, distribute the loops as follows: 6 loops for the side parts and 8 loops for the middle. Start decreasing:

1st row (wrong side of the fabric) - purl loops: tie 6 loops of the 1st side part, then all the loops of the middle part, except for the last loop, knit it with the adjacent loop of the 2nd side part (5 loops of 2- and side parts were left untied). Knitting turn. 2nd row (front side of the fabric) - front loops: remove the edge loop and pull it tightly to the knitting needle, then tie all the loops of the middle part, except for the last loop, knit it together with the adjacent loop of the 1st side part of the front behind the back walls. Knitting turn.

Repeat 1st and 2nd rows until all sts of the side parts are knitted with the extreme sts of the middle part. The work should end with knitting the front row. Only the loops of the middle part (8 loops) remained on the knitting needle.

When a heel is formed, a nylon or other strong thread can be attached to a woolen thread. Having finished knitting the heel, the nylon thread is cut off and knitting is continued with a woolen thread.

Lift wedge

Knitting a sock to decrease on the toe. Knit this part of the sock again in a circle with facial loops. Start as follows: with the knitting needle on which the loops of the middle part are located, pick up new loops on the front side of the sock from the edge heels - from each edge, one front, only 10 loops (Fig. 340). Next, with a free knitting needle, knit 10 loops on the 1st knitting needle, then with another knitting needle - 10 loops on the 2nd. loops). 4 knitting needles turned out to be in the work again, and on the 3rd and 4th there must be more loops than on the 1st and 2nd. Extra loops are needed so that the sock does not tighten the instep of the leg. Now knit in a circle and at the same time decrease the extra loops on the 3rd and 4th knitting needles, knitting them 2 together purl through 2 rows (circles). So that the thickening from the decrease does not interfere with walking, make them from the edges of the foot, i.e. at the beginning of the 3rd knitting needle and at the end of the 4th. When they have the initial number of loops (10 on each), stop the decrease and knit sock to the end of the little finger (or to the beginning of the toe)

Description based on Budd Ann's book "Sock Knitting Master Class - 2011" and various descriptions from R.

Heel shaping.

The wall of the heel is made in the same way as for the square heel.

Finish the work with the front row.

Heel turn

Start with a purl row. Mark the center of the heel wall with a marker.

1 row. Slip off the first loop as a purl. Purl out 2 sts past the middle marker. Knit 2 together purl, 1 purl, turn the work.

2 row. Slip off the first loop as a purl (thread at the back). Knit 5 front loops. 2 persons together. tilted to the left. 1 person., turn the work.

Now the heel loops are divided into parts - the middle and the "sides"

3 row. Slip off the first loop as a purl (thread in front). Purl to the last loop of the middle part. Knit 2 together purl, 1 purl, turn the work.

4 row. Slip off the first loop as a purl (thread at the back). Knit to the last loop. 2 persons together. tilted to the left. 1 person., turn the work.

There are two standard ways to knit a heel at a sock with regular knitting needles. Let me try to tell you in a step-by-step photo-instruction how to knit a sock heel with knitting needles.

Let's show both methods with an example:

Way of forming an angle.

We start knitting any sock with an elastic band, then we knit a stocking. Having knitted up to the moment when you need to make a heel, we divide our number of loops placed on three or four knitting needles, place them on one knitting needle.
For example, we will simply cast on 20 loops, imagining that this is half the circumference of the toe.

1. We collect loops.

We knit the first row with the usual purl, small loops. It must be remembered that the first loop in the row is always removed without knitting, regardless of the pattern, and the last one is knitted in any case. At the end of the row, carefully knit the last two loops together.

2. We knit the first row, cutting the last loop.

3. Finished first row.

Now we turn around and knit the next row, knitting the last two regular loops together. So we continue, subtracting a loop in each row.

4. We continue to cut the extreme loops.

We reach the moment when 9 loops remain on the knitting needle.

5. We finish the reduction of the loops.

Having knitted a row, in our case with purl loops, we “pick up” the loop shortened in the previous row, thereby increasing the number of loops on the knitting needle.

6. We select the reduced loop.

7. We knit a shortened loop.

We do the same in the next, the same front row with a front loop.

8. We select a loop in the front row.

9. The front row of the loop, one more photo.

10. We knit a loop.

We continue to knit, adding one regular loop at the end of each row.

11. We continue to pick up loops.

12. Front side.

Having collected all the reduced loops, we get our original 20 loops. Now the heel is ready, then we continue to knit the sock in a circle.

13. Finished heel.

14. Side view of the finished heel.

15. View from the inside of the finished heel.

Turning method.

To use the second method of the heel at the toe, it is desirable that the number of loops allocated to the heel (that is, half the circumference of the toe) be divided without a remainder by three, if it is not divided entirely, it is permissible to leave one in the remainder.
So, let's take 21 loops as an example.

16. Cast on 21 sts.

Then we knit with a simple stocking stitch, that is, we carefully knit one row with the facial loops already familiar to us, and of course one with the wrong ones. The number of rows is calculated as follows: the number of loops at the beginning (21) is divided by three (7) and multiplied by two (14). In total, we need to knit 14 rows with a simple stocking stitch.

17. Knit 14 rows in stocking stitch.

Now we divide the initial number of loops (21) by three, we get three times seven. We knit the first seven loops, then the next six, and knit the seventh together with the initial first loop of the last seven.

18. We divide our knitting into three parts and begin to turn.

Now we turn around, knit six loops, knit the seventh together with the first of the first seven. Do not forget that the first loop is removed not knitted.

19. We perform a turn from the wrong side.

We knit so neatly until only the middle seven loops remain on your knitting needle.

20. Seven loops remain.

21. Wrong side.

22. Side view.

Now we begin to pick up the loops on the sides.

23. We begin to pick up loops from the first side.

We collect seven loops from the first side, just reaching the beginning of knitting the heel.

24. We select 7 loops.

Now we unfold the knitting.

25. We turn around.

We knit a row, collecting seven loops in the same way on the other side.

26. We select the loops on the other side.

Now the heel is ready, we continue to knit the sock in a circle.

27. Heel, side view.

28. View from below.

29. Wrong side.

As you can see, both methods are easy to perform and look equally neat. Use really the one that you personally prefer.
