LaParfumerie. : Blackcurrant - Notes - Perfumes - LaParfumerie

Recently, among perfumers and fragrance lovers there has been an increasing interest in fruit and berry notes, which can “revive”, make any aroma bright and cheerful. Among berry perfume notes, currants are traditionally especially loved by perfumers.

As you know, currants come in white, black and red. The word “currant” itself comes from the Old Slavonic word “currant”, which means “strong aroma, smell”. Of all the varieties, black currant has the most intense aroma, and not only the berries smell, but also the leaves and stems. Its rich, thick and very recognizable aroma has an evening, passionate tint, and is often used in oriental fragrances and evening perfumes. The aroma of red currant is less intense, it is much weaker, but more positive and cheerful. In its effect, it is close to strawberry or citrus aromas, which have a summer, sunny character. Much less commonly used in perfumery are varieties of white currants that have virtually no odor, or with a very weakly expressed aroma.

We will start our review of perfumes with “currant” notes with aromas with black currant. This perfume note can be found in compositions of any brand. It is safe to say that in the collection of every perfumer there is at least one, and more often - several fragrances with notes of black currant.

In 2002, perfumer Mark Buxton created for an avant-garde brand Comme des Garcons chypre - a floral perfume composition with a laconic name - 3 , which included, in addition to woody, citrus, floral and spicy notes, the aroma of black currant. An oriental spicy composition with a note of black currant in the heart called 1697 in 2011 perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour created for the famous cognac and perfume house Frapin. In 2010, a German niche brand presented its vision of “Holy Water” Linari- perfume composition Acqua Santa, which included notes of black currant, created by the perfumer Maurice Roucel. The mysterious oriental floral aroma from Brecourt entitled Agaressence, its author is a perfumer Emily Bouge blackcurrant aroma was placed in the opening notes. And another fragrance with notes of black currant from this brand - personifying the absolute freedom inherent only in youth L'amoureuse.

Tom Fordintroduced in 2007 a romantic and tempting women's floral oriental perfume Black Orchid Voile de Fleur, in 2010 he also presented a floral woody musky perfume Azure Lime, and in the same year the famous perfume house Creed introduced the scent Aventus, dedicated to the large-scale historical figure of Napoleon Bonaparte. All of these fragrances contain notes of black currant, just like the women's fragrance released in the same 2010 Aube Pashmina from Huitieme Art Parfums. Another fragrance from the same brand - Myrrhiad, created in 2011 by perfumer Pierre Guillaume, contains in its perfume composition the aroma of blackcurrant juice.

Famous perfumer Jean Francois Laporte for your brand Maitre Parfumeur et Gantier created a woody aromatic perfume for men in 1991 Centaure; in 2006, an American perfume brand Ineke presented women's perfumes with a romantic, playful disposition - Chemical Bonding; another American brand - Tossa presented a perfume composition dedicated to the most beautiful of women, the Egyptian Queen Cleopatra - a fragrance of the same name Cleopatra; and the great Italian Lorenzo Villoresi in 1994 he introduced his floral unisex perfume Donna. All these aromas, different in character, are united by the fact that notes of black currant are clearly audible in their composition.

This floral-oriental scent can be called a real masterpiece. The Mistresses of Louis XIV, created in 2008 Pierre Bourdon For Romea d'Ameor. Its rich composition, which never ceases to amaze with its versatility, includes notes of galbanum, melon, black currant, cloves, greenery, jasmine, lily, narcissus, rose, lily of the valley, iris, noble wood, amber, musk and apricot.

The list of “blackcurrant” aromas can be continued Paestum Rose And Eau D'Italie from the brand of the same name Eau D'Italie, rainbow fruity-floral perfume Eau Fantastique from Fragonard; created for Les Parfums de Rosine perfumer Francois Robert feminine floral scent Ecume; two scents from Van Cleef & Arpels: created by perfumer Antoine Maisondieu poetic scent Feerie and creation Jean-Claude Elena- elegant and sophisticated women's perfume First. This list would not be complete without a sensual and elegant scent. Ginger Musk or bright fruity Pretty Fruity from Montale, subtle and delicate aroma Julia from Teo Cabanel, authored by Jean-Francois Latty, a modern and elegant scent Portrait of a Lady by Frederic Malle and many others .

Unlike fragrances with notes of black currant, which are mostly classified as oriental and evening scents, perfume compositions with red currant have a more playful and frivolous, bright and youthful character. This is what the aroma is Lucky Charm from a French perfume brand M.Micallef. This fragrance is charming in its lightness and amazing simplicity; it is very cheerful, bright and juicy. The fragrance of jasmine and rose, the forest freshness of lily of the valley, the juicy taste of ripe tangerine combined with plum, as well as a berry mix of active red currants and a slightly muted black currant in the trail, sweetened with honey and warmed by warm musk - this is a charming aroma Lucky Charm.

In the very name of the perfume from the American brand Freshwhich sounds like Redcurrant Basil, and translated as Currant and Basil, it is implied that a perfume composition will be built around this unexpected duet. The aroma of dreams, desires fulfilled and romance opens with notes of Italian lemon, kumquat and Moroccan basil, followed by aromas of Turkish rose, pomegranate and red currant leaves. The composition is completed by musk, rosewood and cedar.

Speaking about redcurrant aromas, it is impossible to ignore several Guerlain perfume compositions, the leader among which will be Grosellina - fragrance included in the collection Aqua Allegoria. The packaging of the fragrance depicts red currant berries, and the perfume composition itself is an almost mono-aroma in which this berry reigns supreme. A very cute, youthful and unobtrusive perfume consists of a cocktail of citrus notes - bergamot, mandarin, lemon, the aroma of white tea and a berry composition of raspberries and red currants. Another fragrance from the Aqua Allegoria series, called Herba fresca. A very fresh and aromatic composition, reminiscent of early morning, consists, in addition to notes of red currant, of the aromas of lemon, tea, fresh mint, lily of the valley and cyclamen.

Composition Aqua AllegoriaHerba fresca is represented by both women's and men's perfumes, however, in both compositions, the slightly sour notes of red berries are clearly audible. Notes of red currant are also contained in the classic floral and fruity aroma from Guerlain - Samsara Shine and in a very feminine, incomparably sensual perfume Insolence Eau Glacee, and in a floral-fruity aroma Gerlain Insolence Blooming released in 2010.

Camille Goutal, continuing the work started by her mother, the famous Annick Goutal, presented the scent of love and selfless passion - Quel Amour, the composition of which includes notes of intoxicating and passionate peony, the fragrance of wild rose, the sensual aroma of pink geranium, slightly sour notes of pomegranate, blueberry, red currant, black cherry and a juicy fruity aroma of peach, adding a slight piquancy.

And the review of “currant aromas” will be completed by a perfume composition that includes notes of both red and black currants - Aqua di Roma from Laura Biagiotti. This perfume, intended for young, cheerful, carefree girls, was created for the home Laura Biagiotti perfumer Carlos Vinals, which combines into a unique composition aromatic notes of sandalwood, vanilla, musk, mandarin, bergamot, rose, wood, lemon, amber, tuberose, black and red currants, fresh herbs, citrus, mimosa, honeysuckle, magnolia and citron.

Properties of blackcurrant aroma.

The aroma of blackcurrant is fresh, herbaceous, slightly minty, fruity, with woody notes, balsamic. This scent relieves stress and tension and is used to combat depression and long-term emotional discomfort.

Combines with blood orange, bergamot, cloves, vanilla, ylang-ylang, cedar, cardamom, mimosa, carrot seeds, rosewood, chamomile, sage, violet.

Essential oil.

Essential oil (absolute) of black currant is obtained from the leaves and buds of the plant by steam distillation, as well as solvent extraction. It is contained in the glands that cover the underside of the leaves. It is thanks to the oil that blackcurrant leaves are used for pickling and marinades.

But every perfumer has his own secrets for extracting the scent. For example, a spicy, rich fruity aroma with a hint of wood is obtained using buds, leaves, shoots and berries.

It should be noted that black currant is the most fragrant of all types of currants, and especially its buds. In perfumery they are called “bourgeons de cassis”. And this perennial shrub got its Russian name from the word “currant”, which in Old Russian meant “strong smell”.

The smell of currants in perfumery.

The aroma of black currant in perfume compositions is not uncommon. It has been familiar to everyone since childhood and, perhaps, that is why it has become so beloved and recognizable, and perfumes with it are attracting more and more fans. Despite its modesty, it is often heard in the most expensive and prestigious brands. Every perfumer's collection has at least one creation with this note.

And Jean-Paul Guerlain was one of the first to use the smell of black currant in his “Chamade”.

Usually this smell is attributed to fruity notes when they want to convey the aroma of berries. Or they use its herbaceous-woody shade with mint echoes. Absolute is often used in middle notes and also as a scent fixative.

In contrast to the light, playful mood of red currants, black currants are more noble, rich and bright. Its passionate notes are even found in oriental perfumes.

Emotional impact.

The aroma of black currant calms, relieves stress, and helps with depression. That’s why in autumn and winter it’s so nice to open a jar of currant jam or brew tea from the leaves.

Medicinal and cosmetic properties.

Black currant is one of the healthiest berries. 20 berries a day are enough to increase the body's protective functions. It improves metabolic processes, increases immunity, and restores strength.

The oil contains a lot of phytoncides; it is a good general strengthening agent. During periods of cold weather and slush, it can be added to tea. The flavonoids quercetin, myricetin, isoquercetin, and kempferol contained in the oil treat blood vessels, bleeding gums, and are also distinguished by their antioxidant properties.

Blackcurrant essential oil is non-irritating to the skin and non-phototoxic. In the food industry, absolute is used as a flavor enhancer. In pharmaceuticals - for the treatment of anorexia.

However, essential oil is not easy to find on sale. Therefore, a decoction of leaves and buds is used to treat dermatitis, as well as colds, cardiovascular diseases, and gastritis.

Also, blackcurrant essential oil should not be confused with base oil, which is extracted from the seeds and cake of berries. It is no less valuable than essential oil, and is used mainly in cosmetology and the pharmaceutical industry.

We have long been accustomed to the fact that on store shelves you can find a huge selection of luxury perfumes from Yves Saint Laurent, and you, too, probably have such a bottle. But not everyone knows about the selective Oriental Collection line - these are also YSL perfumes, only more complex and expensive, “for the elite”. We have no doubt that you will appreciate it! We especially liked Supreme Bouquet - an incredibly feminine and sensual scent, suitable for both day and evening. In its heart is tuberose, which gives it a special sound, and auxiliary notes are pear, pink pepper, ylang-ylang, amber and musk. Mm!..

Blackcurrant in nature and in perfumery.
By: Olga Ikebanova & Elena Vosnaki
BLACKCURRANT IN NATURE
As I sat down to write this article about blackcurrants (which really loom large in my childhood memories), I noticed that something was missing from my table. I went to the kitchen and opened the tea cabinet - my “magic” cabinet. There I found blackcurrant leaves that had been collected near St. Petersburg and brewed a cup of aromatic tea.
While sipping this wonderful drink... I miraculously discovered a jar of blackcurrant jam in the kitchen. Oh this is such a unique scent! Now, inspired, I can write an article!
The aroma of black currant cannot be confused with any other! It's not like the scents of jasmine or honeysuckle that wrap you in a tight hug as soon as you approach the bush. Blackcurrant is very “shy”, it waits for the “first step” from you. But as soon as you touch its green leaves, it greets you with a delicious fragrance! Moreover, the aroma comes from all parts of the plant - from leaves, green cuttings, buds, berries...
Blackcurrant leaves are often added to tea and used to add flavor to pickles and marinades. Buds are excellent material for liqueurs; absolutes for perfumery are extracted from them. The berries are widely used to make juices, jams, liqueurs, ciders, wines and candies; They are eaten raw and dried.

Black currant is a shrub cultivated in both Europe and Asia. And everywhere it is very popular due to its healing properties. Blackcurrant berries and leaves contain a lot of vitamin C and carotene, a decent percentage of potassium, phosphorus, iron, vitamin B, calcium and essential oils, as well as a wide range of other important nutrients.
Blackcurrant seed oil also contains many important health substances, such as vitamin E, omega-3 fatty acids (alpha-linolenic acid or ALA) and omega-6 gamma-linoleic acid (GLA). All these substances are important for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases.
All parts of the plant can be used to make tinctures that have high anti-inflammatory properties. They are used to treat colds, bronchitis, headaches, stomach pain, etc.

Blackcurrant tea
Here is my recipe for blackcurrant tea: take 3 tablespoons of currant leaves, 1 tablespoon of hibiscus flowers (hibiscus), put it all in a teapot, pour boiling water over it and wait 5-10 minutes. Enjoy!
BLACKCURRANT IN PERFUMERY:
Production and aroma profile

Blackcurrant bud absolute is known in France as "bourgeons de cassis". The absolute is obtained from the Ribes nigrum bush, and its aroma is noticeably different from the synthetic "blackcurrant". The latter is often a rather sweet-sounding component that was very popular in perfumery in the 1980s and early 1990s. [For example, Tiffany by Tiffany (perfumer Jacques Polge) 1987 and Poeme by Lancome (perfumer Jacques Cavallier) 1995.] Compared to the artificial berry scent of blackcurrant, natural blackcurrant bud absolute is greener and lighter. , with a characteristic "cat" nuance.
Responsible for the characteristic berry and bud aroma of black currants are trichomes (glandular hairs), which carry thiols, especially 4-methoxy-2-methylbutane-2-thiol, a component that adds a "cat pee" note to top fruit notes. Three different hydroxynitrile compounds also contribute significantly to the blackcurrant aroma profile. (And to her taste.) But these substances are present, in addition to blackcurrant, in other plants. These plants, however, are much less often used in perfumery. For example, the leaves of the South African buchu are added to black currants if you want to enhance the “cat” effect.

Blackcurrant absolute, as mentioned above, is obtained from the buds of the bush. (It can be found, for example, in the product line of the Biolandes company, which produces absolute in France, in the Le Sen and Valreas regions.) In addition, distillation of the plant leaves is possible to obtain a natural aroma. (This is the method used by perfumer Aurelien Guichard.) In addition, blackcurrant extract can be extracted from a paste/gruel obtained from leaves, berries and shoots; it has a spicy-fruity-woody aroma, but retains freshness, sharp nuances and a slightly phenolic sound.

The most famous example of the use of natural blackcurrant is the Guerlain classic, the 1969 fragrance Chamade, created by Jean Paul Guerlain. A different, but also completely special “face” is given by natural blackcurrant buds from Van Cleef & Arpels in their First fragrance from 1976 (perfumer - Jean-Claude Ellena).

However, blackcurrant bud absolute can negatively affect the eyes, respiratory tract and skin, causing irritation or allergies. Because of this, natural blackcurrant absolute should be no more than 1.0000% in the aroma composition, and no more than 20.0000 ppm in the composition of, for example, a food additive.

In perfumery, blackcurrant bud absolute is especially often and successfully combined with the following components: allyl amyl glycolate (a modern “pineapple” accord with metallic and musky undertones), ambrettolide (a light aroma of plant musk), benzoin (sweet resin), benzyl acetate (fruity-floral). aroma with a hint of jasmine), buchu leaf oil (to enhance the "cat" note), orange and other citrus oils, cyclamen, aldehydes, beta-damascone (rose-fruity aroma), beta-ionone (violet accord), ethyl maltol (scent cotton candy), heliotrope, galbanum (a bitter green resin), oakmoss (a lichen-woody scent with bitter, inky undertones), jasmine absolute and various raspberry ketones.

I saw a review of Brocard eau de toilette from the “Scents of Nature” series Blackcurrant and Mint.

I thought for a long time where I could find them in stock, since I don’t like buying unfamiliar perfumes through IM. I’m afraid of getting a pig in a poke. I went to all the inexpensive cosmetic stores in the area. And here the treasured bottle stands on the shelf in the company of its fellows.

I tried out the other flavors in the series first, and saved the currant for dessert. Of all the ones presented, I only liked the tomato tops.

And here it is, the moment of acquaintance with currants from Brocard... The first breath... And I was lost. This is love... Mind-blowing love, like in youth, like for the first time.

I found myself in the village, very young, not knowing negativity and disappointment. I stand and unconsciously crumple a currant leaf in my hand and look at the sunset. And my soul is so light, bright, joyful. Some indescribable feeling of anticipation of something unusual, bright.

Sparkle in the eyes, a sea of energy and ambition. - It's decided! I run to the checkout and pay for this magical elixir.

It was all lyrics... Let's take a closer look at our acquisition.

Package.

You know, even with expensive perfumes I don’t always come across such a presentation. It's great! Such a sophisticated vintage design. Just look at her! How lovely. Beautiful font, delicate colors. And the drawings from the botanical atlas are delightful! I want to sit down and redraw them on a piece of paper myself.

Bottle.

Made of glass. Not made of plastic, but of natural glass. There is nothing superfluous in it. Smooth lines, neat sticker. Perhaps I would just make the cap different to my taste. But it’s still wonderful. It adds a special touch to the bottle. The sprayer works properly. Gives off a very soft cloud of aroma.

Manufacturer's description.

Story. The name "Currant" comes from the Old Russian "currant" - a strong smell. In folk tales and songs, “black currant berry” is a symbol of female youth and beauty. In Russian novels and poems, a currant bush in a quiet estate garden is a sign of happy childhood memories and home traditions.

Aroma. Spicy, warm, with a cheerful sourness on the tip of the tongue. The berries have a light summer-like sweetness, and the tart aroma of currant leaves adds a capricious note. Currants are complemented by fresh herbs, mint and the delicate sweetness of roses. The trail of cozy garden scents is unexpectedly deep, like the mysterious twilight color of ripe berries.

Mood. Currants love light and seem to absorb the warmth of the July sun. The “Blackcurrant” aroma conveys the serenity of a summer holiday, when all your worries include picking ripe berries. And figure out what to do with them: bake a pie according to your grandmother’s recipe, make jam that will take you from winter straight into summer, or maybe stretch out under a fragrant currant bush and eat a mug of juicy berries right now.

Persistence.

When I purchased Blackcurrant, I didn’t even expect good durability because of the price. But she turned out to be beyond praise. Sounds great on the skin for 8 hours. On clothes and hair 12 hours or more.

Price.

240-250 rubles. These are mere pennies for such a magical aroma!

My impressions.

To say that I am delighted is to say nothing! I'm fascinated by this scent. I put all my other scents in the far corner. My husband rarely notices fragrances on me. But he noticed the currants. When I brought them home he even used them on himself. I was very surprised, because I had never noticed anything like this in him before. This scent truly awakens forgotten memories and emotions. I'm ready to use it for a long time, as I adore the blackcurrant note and always look for it like crazy. And here it is, in its purest form. By the way, I practically don’t smell mint.

And a couple of weeks after trying on the currants for the first time, I realized that I needed more!

And I bought a second package. By the way, this is not very simple. They sell it like hot cakes. In both stores where I purchased it, I took the last one. And the rest of the fragrances in the series remained sad.

In general, if you are a fan of the currant note in perfume, you MUST find this bottle and test it. It is unlikely that you will remain indifferent, and at least buy it for your collection. Because the price allows you to buy at least 10 bottles!
